Tubing Bundle And Mineral-Insulated Cable Procurement

Client Profile

With approximately 7,500 employees, our client specializes in building, managing, and maintaining a network of natural gas and crude oil pipelines, along with nuclear power f and power generation facilities.

One of our client’s priorities is to make life better for consumers by setting and exceeding a high set of quality standards that preserve workplace safety and minimize their environmental impact. They strive to make a positive difference in their communities through education, responsibility, and accountability.

THE CLIENT'S NEED

Our client needed higher-grade tubing bundles and mineral-insulated (MI) cables for a custom build. Tubing bundles, which come with 1 to 3 tubes and heat trace components, insulation layers, and an outer jacket, are typically ordered from manufacturers in the United States. Unfortunately, the typical lead time for parts manufacturing and shipping from the US is 12 to 16 weeks.

Similarly, MI cables can take 2 to 6 weeks to receive from manufacturers, most of which are located in Southern Ontario and the United States.

In both cases, long product lead times result in project downtime and inefficiencies that cost money each day production is slowed or halted.

“Fast turnaround is crucial in the oil and gas industry. Whether you’re building a new facility or replacing parts due to breakage or aging out, downtime while waiting for parts can be costly. We understood the challenges the client was facing and were determined to develop a solution.”
– Chris Maki, CEO, MSCP Heat Management Solutions

Our client, who had worked with us as a partner contractor on other projects, didn’t want to wait months for parts or settle for subpar equipment from reputable dealers. Instead, they turned to us for a solution that would allow for faster turnaround times on essential system parts and components.

MSCP'S APPROACH

Our long history working with heat trace systems gave us insight into what oil and gas producers need to improve efficiencies and carry out regular maintenance and repair on their infrastructure.

Our solution was to develop heat trace components, insulation, and electrical panels locally in Sherwood Park, Alberta, at the very heart of Canada’s oil and gas industries.

“During our research into heat trace and insulation components manufacturing, we discovered that 90% of the raw materials needed to build these parts are sourced from within Canada. It only made sense for MSCP to bring cost savings and shorter lead times to our clients by manufacturing these components ourselves.”
– Chris Maki, CEO, MSCPHeat Management Solutions

MSCP industrial-grade products are perfect for the deep Canadian winters. Our in-house engineers design, develop, and build to-spec heat trace equipment customized for the client’s particular needs. MSCP not only ensured that our client received rugged, durable equipment made for severely fluctuating Canadian temperatures, but we also drastically cut their lead time on development and delivery.

Our engineers also used our digital working packages to provide a full MI cable manufacturing audit for CSA product certification. This package included pictures taken daily of the work progress to show every step of the manufacturing process.

THE RESULTS

After meeting with our client to learn all about their needs and make product recommendations to keep their system running efficiently, our engineers got to work to build and deliver the necessary equipment to their exact specifications.

The overall results of our work included:

  • Reduction in the lead time of tubing bundles from twelve weeks to seven days
  • MI cables delivered within five days, down from the standard four weeks, and expedited within 48 hours
  • Locally-built parts saved our clients money due to reduced lead time and costs from production downtime
  • Complete digitization of working packages for building custom MI cables

Of course, heavy-duty heat trace components built to withstand the deep cold are also needed for repair or regular maintenance. Sometimes, heating cables break, insulation can get wet, and parts wear out naturally over time. When that happens, new components need to be ready to keep the production lines flowing.
